TESTED. The U.S. Department of Transportation is out with its “Specific Collection Guidelines” for drug testing and let’s just say we haven’t seen such, well, detailed descriptions of bathroom activities since we read the graffiti on the walls of elementary school restrooms a few decades ago. The guidelines are at the DOT site for anyone who wants the full version. It’s sad enough, of course, that the department has to get so explicit to prevent people from faking out the testing. Still, even with unemployment rising, its not really heartening that the field of drug test validation is growing.
GOLD STANDARD. We were as riveted as everyone to the TV coverage of the Beijing Olympics Games, and especially the commercials. Our favorite was the U.S. Postal Service commercial boasting that they still haul those packages without adding a fuel surcharge. One transport chief we know says it’s easy to do that if you don’t mind losing $1.1 billion, as the USPS recently did.
STEAMED. We know shippers and carriers are being hit hard by diesel fuel prices, but now the prices are really starting to hit home. The Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad is cutting off its scenic ride at the halfway point to Milford, N. Y., and heading back to the station. It may not be exactly an abandonment, but we’re having our attorney check with the Surface Transportation Board just the same.
LOADED. We’re not sure what to make of the assessment by Wyoming State Police of a tractor-trailer accident there. They said the truck’s load was not damaged but the fuel spilled out. Most truckers would argue for goodness sakes, let the load go but please save that precious, precious fuel.
SWEET. Speaking of spills, the summer’s best truck unloading may have been in Texas, where a rig lost its 5,000 gallons of molasses onto a state road. That could have been why several drivers from Galveston to Austin had a nagging urge last month for some pancakes.
