With all that’s going on in the world and economy — not to overlook runaway fuel prices — more than ever before people in transportation have to take a close look at their freight charges. “People think because there’s a huge fuel surcharge it’s sometimes really an overage, but most of the time fuel surcharges are what they are,” O’Rourke said.

“We really are working with their rates, their commodities, their routes and the fuel surcharge is just one aspect,” said

Silverman of Atlas Traffic.

“We’re looking for where the company has been overcharged, regardless of where in the bill.

“ We still look at ourselves as an insurance policy because we’re on contingency.

It’s a mistake if companies don’t use a post auditor. Every manufacturer should want to review these bills, regardless of how well it’s

doing with a pre-audit payment service, technology, regardless of anything,” he said. “The biggest change taking place now is more and more of our clients are looking to drive down their real cost of freight: ‘Just give us back our money’.”

Clients now want to go “behind” the money and determine what that value is to them and whether

it’s something they can change. “Manufacturers and shippers need to incorporate post-auditors as some degree of a partnership, as opposed to ‘Just make money for us and don’t bother us. Tell us what’s in those bills; we’re not seeing what you guys see’,” Silverman said. ■
